RedisDays Available Now On-Demand.
There’s no better way to kick off 2020 than with the Redis community, which came out in full force on January 21–22 for Redis Day Bangalore, our first-ever Redis Day in India. We hosted more than 600 attendees over two jam-packed days of Redis excitement. Highlights included our inaugural hackathon and a sold-out training day, followed by 15 amazing presentations from Redis users and Redis experts.
In addition, we also hosted an Executive Forum with senior leaders from multiple industries, who shared their thoughts on the challenges that keep them awake at night. The agenda included a keynote presentation from Sanchit Vir Gogia, Founder and Chief Analyst at Greyhound Research, as well as a panel session featuring Redis CTO and Co-Founder Yiftach Shoolman and a trio of customers.
The event was a great opportunity for developers, engineers, software architects, programmers, and business leaders to mingle and share their Redis tips, tricks, and stories. Notably, many of the event’s conversations, presentations, and projects focused on the upcoming release of Redis 6 and customers using Redis beyond caching applications.

The official programming kicked off with Redis creator Salvatore Sanfilippo’s presentation outlining some of the most valuable new features in the upcoming Redis 6 release. The crowd loved Salvatore’s demo of access control lists (ACLs), which help control which clients can perform certain operations. Salvatore also discussed using Disque, a distributed, in-memory, message broker, as a Redis module.
Then Redis’ Yiftach Shoolman delved into the exciting new features coming to Redis Enterprise, including Active-Active Redis Streams, which will enable development of true geo-distributed event-based applications, and RedisGraph v2.0, which will include broad support for Cypher, full-text search using RediSearch, and significant throughput and latency improvements.
The rest of the day was filled with presentations from innovative Redis Enterprise customers and the general Redis community, demonstrating the multitude of ways leading enterprises and startups are using Redis. Amit Agrawal of sRide, India’s largest carpool and bikepool app, demonstrated how Redis can power large-scale, real-time data applications. To prove it, he shared a graph showing sRide’s Redis application performance at peak usage times.

Stanford AI Lab’s Jayesh Ahire and [tensor]werk’s Sherin Thomas gave an interactive joint presentation showing how to build a complex deep-learning application using TensorFlow 2.0 and Redis. The pair demoed a Tensorflow model deployed in RedisAI that classifies photos sent to it from Twilio via WhatsApp. And in deploying Redis as a Sidecar in Kubernetes, meanwhile, analyst Janakiram MSV discussed patterns and practices of deploying Redis in a microservices environment.
But learning about Redis from the experts was only one part of Redis Day Bangalore. The day before all the presentations, Redis hosted our first-ever hackathon. Thirty-seven competitors across a dozen teams were challenged to demonstrate how to use Redis “beyond cache” in one of three categories:
The hackathon concluded with presentations to the judges: Sripathi Krishnan, HashedIn CTO; Janakiram MSV, Principal Analyst, Janakiram & Associates; and Guy Korland, Redis CTO of Incubations. The next day, three finalists presented their work to close out the conference.
While all the submissions were creative and inspiring—showing just how versatile Redis is for use cases beyond the cache—the ultimate winner was Streaming Video on Steroids, created by Prashanth Pai, Neel Dalsania, and Ramey Girdhar using Redis Streams and RediSearch. The application transcribes videos and matches the words to clips in the video, allowing a user to search in a video for a specific phrase or mention.
Second place went to Atish Andhare’s Story of Being On-Call, a RedisTimeSeries-powered Slackbot designed to provide quick observations of your systems on the go, such as when you’re commuting or traveling. Third place was awarded to Sachin Kottarathodi and Ritesh Ghodrao for Real-Time Fraud Detection, which uses Redis data structures and modules to detect fraud in real time.
Held in conjunction with the hackathon on day one, the sold-out training day was perfect for those new to Redis and even experienced users who wanted to brush up on the latest features and capabilities. Session topics included Redis Streaming Architectures, Redis Modeling & Patterns, RedisTimeSeries, RediSearch, and more. The trainees enjoyed a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on knowledge of how to deploy Redis to address use cases beyond caching, such as powerful, instant, full-text search.
Redis Day Bangalore wound down with a networking happy hour that allowed attendees, some who traveled halfway across the world, to relax and share Redis stories with their peers.
Popular topics of discussion included the wide variety of Redis’ capabilities enabled by modules like RediSearch, RedisAI, and RedisTimeSeries. Many attendees were surprised to learn about Redis’ versatility and “immense possibilities,” including use as a primary database. “The usage of Redis surpassing most traditional datastores. That caught me by surprise,” one attendee said.
Other attendees said they came to Redis Day Bangalore to learn about new ways to use Redis from other users. “I love using Redis in my applications,” said one attendee, “and this event seemed like an opportunity for me to learn more.”
We were proud to demonstrate how Redis can be used on such a large scale, with many Indian customers going beyond the cache and using Redis as a meaningful database platform. Until next time, Bangalore!
