CRDTs Expert, Carlos Baquero, PhD, Joins Redis Labs’ Technical Advisory Board

Baquero brings data management expertise to the Redis Enterprise database

Mountain View, January 25, 2018—Redis Labs, the home of Redis and provider of Redis Enterprise, today announced that Carlos Baquero, PhD, known for being one of the creators of Conflict-Free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs), will join the company’s technical advisory board. An assistant professor at Universidade do Minho and senior researcher at the High Assurance Software Laboratory at INESC TEC, Baquero is a well known technology pioneer.

CRDTs simplify the development of active-active databases and resolves conflicts in a seamless manner without application intervention. Combined with Redis Enterprise, developers can now use the popular Redis data-types in an active-active geo-distributed manner.

“It became clear that Redis is an ideal scenario for CRDTs due to its rich data types and data type-specific APIs,” said Carlos Baquero. “With my focus on CRDTs, and a goal to improve the design of efficient CRDTs implementations, I’m excited to join the Redis Labs’ technical advisory board to bridge the gap between state of the art research and industrial strength products that are already in use at large scale.”

In the 1990’s, Baquero began researching data types for automatic reconciliation of data structures as he pursued his PhD. His work around CRDTs provided a catalogue of data types that gained industry attention as it validated a well-grounded approach to eventual consistency. As a member of the technical advisory board, Baquero brings a portfolio of distributed computing research expertise, and will contribute to Redis Labs’ strategy in accelerating database innovation to serve its customers better.

“CRDTs is at the core of Redis Enterprise approach to enable active-active globally distributed highly available database. It provides local latencies for geo-distributed database deployment, seamless conflict resolution for simple and complex data-types, and true high-availability including cases where the majority of the geo-distributed replicas are not connected to each other,” said Yiftach Shoolman, CTO and co-founder of Redis Labs. “Carlos’ proven academic record in the areas of distributed computing and conflict resolution will offer Redis Labs technology an edge that will benefit our customers.”
