For over a decade, developers have been tasked with identifying, selecting, and assembling their infrastructure from an ever growing array of primitives—database services included. As the number of available services has gone up, however, the experience of using them all together has declined. With velocity at a premium in every organization, what developers and their employers alike are demanding is a developer experience that is elegant, broadly capable, and fully integrated. This in turn means that the demands placed on a database platform have shifted dramatically.
